BC 1054 Black Carbon Analyser

Multiwavelength black carbon analyser

The BC 1054, a multi-wavelength black carbon analyser, offers a dependable and cost-effective solution for collecting research-grade data of atmospheric carbonaceous matter. It measures light transmittance across a filter media, where the particles accumulate, at ten different wavelengths between the UV and IR part of the spectrum. This allows an in-depth characterization of the collected particles, probing deep enough into their origin and history.

BC 1054 will directly connect with a variety of additional monitoring instruments, such as Regulatory Monitors like the BAM-1020, discrete particle size and counting modules, or a wide array of Meteorological Sensor inputs.

Active flow control

It features BC 1054’s ability to control the rate at which air is sampled. The user can choose to sample at a rate of either 2 liters per minute (LPM) or 5 LPM, with the device automatically adjusting the flow of air through it to maintain this rate, ensuring the accuracy of measurements. This is crucial because fluctuations in environmental conditions can impact the flow rate and consequently, the accuracy of measurements.

Advanced correction

It utilizes an advanced correction and control system through an integrated filter-loading correction algorithm. This algorithm compensates for filter-loading effects, ensuring accurate measurements of particulate matter absorption onto filter tape. The BC 1054 continuously measures the transmittance of light across the filter media at 10 different wavelengths, from ultraviolet (UV) to infrared (IR).

Extended Data Storage

The device features a spacious internal memory capable of storing data for over a year’s worth of data collected at 1-minute intervals. This allows it to support long-term monitoring projects, with the collected data available for analysis over time to discern trends and patterns. This flexibility in storage capacity enhances the usability and convenience of the BC 1054 for various monitoring applications.

Ultra-high sensitivity

The device demonstrates high sensitivity, is capable of detecting deficient levels of black carbon in the air, and can identify concentrations as low as less than 1 ng/m3. This ensures precise measurements even in environments with minimal black carbon presence.

Factory calibration

Before leaving the factory, each device undergoes calibration using a smoke chamber method identical to that utilized for beta attenuation mass (BAM) monitors, a method tested and proven over time. This calibration procedure ensures stable, reproducible, and traceable measurements, enabling reliable comparisons with other measurements.
